Active Projects

Initiative for Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (IMPT)

The IMPT is the first and only global network dedicated to advancing the field of multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs)—an innovative class of products that simultaneously prevent HIV, other STIs, and/or unintended pregnancy. Currently supported by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, our product-neutral learning network drives innovation to ensure the most promising MPTs reach the hands of women and communities worldwide.

Microbicide Research and Development to Advance HIV Prevention Technologies through Responsive Innovation and Excellence (MATRIX)

MATRIX is a $125M five-year cooperative agreement launched by USAID and funded by PEPFAR. This project brings together sub-Saharan African and U.S. institutions with diverse expertise to synergistically develop safe, effective, and locally acceptable HIV prevention products for adolescent girls and young women through collaborative research. CAMI Health will co-lead two of the project’s technical areas: capacity strengthening and mentoring and business case development.

Product Agnostic Support for Advancing Multipurpose Prevention Technology

CAMI Health will facilitate coordination between relevant stakeholders in multipurpose prevention technology (MPT) development, including product developers, funding agencies, regulatory bodies, academic researchers, the media, and the public in a product neutral capacity to aid in the development of novel MPTs. Note: MPTs are products containing multiple preventative functions, most commonly they consist of a contraceptive plus an HIV preventative but can contain other anti-infectives as long as the product has at least two indications.

Completed Projects

Beyond the data: Story mapping reproductive health lives

This MPT story mapping project involved the integration of community-level population-based data on HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and contraceptive use in sub-Saharan Africa with personal stories from impacted communities to help bring the data to life. The videos portray women, including adolescent girls and young women and pregnant and breastfeeding women, and key influencers, such as male partners, grandmothers and health providers in South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. Technology Landscape on Innovative Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPTs)

With support from Unitaid and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), CAMI Health acting as the IMPT Secretariat prepared and disseminated a landscape assessment report on MPTs and their potential to address sexual and reproductive health needs in low- and middle-income countries, including key enablers and barriers to their successful market entry. This activity included a comprehensive desk review and key informant interviews with nearly 30 leading experts from around the globe. See the report.

TRIO Study Brief on Long-Acting Injections for Women’s HIV Prevention

CAMI Health partnered with RTI International’s Women’s Global Health Imperative to develop a research brief based on the Tablets, Ring, Injections as Options (TRIO) Study, with a focus on long-acting injections as a delivery form for HIV prevention for women and a potential delivery form for multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs). The study’s end-user findings from women and healthcare providers offer insights into late-stage product development, market introduction and rollout.

New Study: ED Buprenorphine Linked to Sustained Opioid Use Disorder Treatment

Patients who get their first dose of buprenorphine in the Emergency Department (ED) are more likely to remain engaged in opioid use disorder treatment 30 days post-discharge, finds a new study from PHI's CA Bridge—reinforcing EDs as critical access points to highly effective, life-saving medication for addiction treatment.
