How you can help Haiti
The earthquake that struck Haiti last week continues to be devastating. There is a significant, immediate need for financial support of emergency relief efforts: food, water, shelter and medical services provided by trained volunteers and professionals.
We suggest supporting organizations that are on the ground and poised to assist with these immediate relief efforts in and around Port-au-Prince:
The American Red Cross
The Global Orphan Project (PoweredbyC3)
Episcopal Relief and Development
Partners in Health
Doctors Without Borders
You can also donate using your mobile phone. Text "Haiti" to 90999 to make a $10 donation to the International Red Cross, or text "Yele" to 501501 to donate $5 to Yele Haiti, Wyclef Jean's foundation. Charges will appear on your next mobile phone bill.
PHI is proud to acknowledge Dr. Ron Waldman, a senior fellow with our Global Health Fellows Program, who had just been tapped by USAID to head the organization of its relief efforts in Haiti. Beyond the relief efforts, however, we expect that many other organizations providing long-term health and public health support will need ongoing assistance as Haiti rebuilds its health infrastructure, so please keep non-relief organizations on your mind in the coming months.
Let us be guided by Haiti's motto: L'union fait la force - unity is strength.
