New Infographic Makes the Case for Multipurpose Prevention Technologies
December 11, 2013
Following the announcement of President Obama’s significant commitment of $100 million for HIV/AIDS treatment research, researchers and funders have called for investment in new multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs). MPTs offer simultaneous protection from HIV, other sexually transmitted infections, and unplanned pregnancy. They are female initiated and many are more discreet than the condom.
PHI's Coalition for Advancing Multipurpose Innovations (CAMI) coordinates the Initiative for Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (IMPT), an international collaboration that includes health care providers and advocates from around the world and is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, NIH, USAID, the World Health Organization and others.
CAMI published an op-ed in the San Francisco Chronicle on December 10 calling for increased support for MPT development. An infographic released today by the IMPT shows the importance of addressing women’s interlinked sexual and reproductive health needs.
