PHI Commends Supreme Court Decision in King v. Burwell

STATEMENT FROM MARY A. PITTMAN, PRESIDENT AND CEO, PUBLIC HEALTH INSTITUTE

“The Public Health Institute (PHI) commends today’s Supreme Court decision in the King v. Burwell case. By protecting the tax subsidies currently received by over 6 million Americans through federally run health insurance exchanges across the country, the ruling helps to ensure that these Americans will continue to be able to afford the healthcare coverage they need.”

“Five years after the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the law is doing what it was intended to do: millions of Americans are now insured because of the exchanges and tax subsidies created under the ACA as well as other provisions of the law. For the first time in years, there have been significant declines in the percentage of Americans who are uninsured, report difficulty paying medical bills, or say they are delaying care because of costs.”

“The people have spoken, and the court has joined them. The ACA is working. We should celebrate its success, rather than pursue misguided efforts to dismantle the law for political gain and strip millions of Americans of the valuable protections it affords them.”

“Let us focus our attention on addressing today’s challenges, not fruitlessly rehashing yesterday’s political battles.”
