"Climate Change—The Public Health Imperative"
In this issue, PHI draws attention to the human health threat caused by climate change. From rising sea levels to basic food production to changing patterns of disease, water and other essential resources impacted by global warming affect everything and everyone. Mary Pittman's, PHI's president and CEO, statement is a call to action: climate change warrants our immediate attention. In another article, PHI's director of its new climate change center describes a comprehensive strategy to address the potential health consequences of climate change. Additionally, Suzanne Petroni, PHI's new vice president for global health offers a perspective on the relationship between population growth and climate change.

Winter 2010
"Reversing Childhood Obesity: A Battle We Cannot Lose"
This newsletter focuses on the nation's epidemic of childhood obesity. Mary A. Pittman, the Public Health Institute's president and chief executive officer, issues a call to action for a unified, determined effort to turn the tide on childhood obesity by addressing the environmental, social and economic factors that contribute to it. In another article, Matthew Marsom, PHI director of public health policy and advocacy, applauds the investment of federal stimulus money for prevention, which can be used to help shape environments to support healthy children and communities. Also in this issue, Lori Dorfman, director of Berkeley Media Studies Group, reveals that food marketers are aggressively pitching their products to children through digital media such as Facebook and cell phones.

This issue focuses on emerging uses of technology to meet public health needs. Mary A. Pittman, the Public Health Institute's president and CEO, urges that mobile phones and Web-based technologies be adapted more rapidly to public health purposes. Carmen Nevarez, vice president for external relations and preventive medicine advisor, describes Dialogue4Health.com, PHI's Web site that promotes collaboration and connection among those working to improve the public's health. This issue also spotlights technology use at two organizations, the new California Center for Connected Health and the Global Health Fellows Program.

This edition also highlights the work of two exciting PHI projects: Puentes de Esperanza and a Berkeley Media Studies Group project aimed at understanding whether and how tobacco and alcohol marketers use digital media to target youth.
