PHI Provides Input to U.N. Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases

PHI has submitted a letter to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on the growing epidemic of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and their linkages to other global health issues. The U.N. had called for input in preparation for its high-level meeting on NCDs on September 19-20. NCDs represent a rising burden on poor and wealthy countries alike, and PHI has taken a leadership role on this important health concern.

First Study to Find Possible Link Between Exposure to Certain Forms of PCBs in Womb and Difficulty Becoming Pregnant as Adult

A new study from the Public Health Institute's Child Health and Development Studies indicates for the first time that a daughter's exposure in her mother's uterus to polycholorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can affect how long it takes the daughter to become pregnant years later.

In observance of World TB Day, PHI calls for continued public health efforts to keep TB under control in California.

Although tuberculosis is at historic lows in the U.S. and California, the disease remains a worldwide epidemic and poses a threat to everyone who breathes because it is spread through travel and migration. Therefore, in recognition of World TB Day on March 24, the Public Health Institute urges state and local public health departments to continue their vigorous efforts to prevent, monitor and treat this age-old disease.

PHI congratulates board member on receiving community health centers' Impact Award

PHI board member, Roberto Tapia-Conyer, recently was recognized for his leadership in implementing a plan to head off the H1N1 pandemic. AltaMed Health Services honored Dr. Tapia-Conyer with its Impact Award at a gala event in Los Angeles on March 5. The award recognizes efforts which have great impact in the community AltaMed serves. AltaMed is the largest non-profit community health clinic system in California. Dr. Tapia-Conyer has been an active member of PHI's board since 2003.

PHI Statement on Health in All Policies Task Force

Governor Schwarzenegger called needed attention to the role government actions play in influencing whether the communities we live in foster healthy eating and physical activity when he ordered the state's Strategic Growth Council to establish a Health in All Policies Task Force at his recent obesity summit. The implications go far beyond obesity. The Public Health Institute (PHI) welcomes this important focus and looks forward to supporting the work of the task force and providing specific recommendations to ensure the success of this promising strategy.
