Each year more than 100,000 deaths in the U.S. are attributed to alcohol. Eighteen percent of Americans experience alcohol abuse or disorders some time in their lives. Forty-five percent of fatal traffic accidents are caused by alcohol. These sobering statistics take a significant economic and social toll on individuals, families and whole communities. They are also what drive a dynamic team of researchers in Emeryville, California, to investigate this drug's many dimensions and its resultant harms. It's not uncommon for underserved communities to become indifferent and feel powerless to reverse the social and environmental conditions that perpetuate poor health and low productivity. But the Center for Collaborative Planning (CCP) at PHI has a long history of successfully engaging the capacity of local communities to act based on their own solutions to effect positive social change. Through training and technical support and by connecting people and resources, CCP helps communities identify their issues and mobilize their many resources to change policies and systems that impact their health and well-being.
