Health provides up-to-the-minute tobacco-related news.
Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights provides excellent advocacy information on such topics as clean indoor air ordinances, smoke-free apartments, and tobacco industry activity. Buck Tobacco Sponsorship Project addresses tobacco promotion and use, including smokeless ("chew/spit") tobacco and cigarettes, at rodeos and in locations throughout the community that the tobacco industry uses to link its products to nearby rodeos. California Youth Advocacy Network (CYAN) works to support young people in the movement for tobacco control. California's Clean Air Project (CCAP) provides technical assistance, training, and educational materials statewide on secondhand smoke issues. Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids works to protect children from tobacco by changing public policy, altering the public's perception of tobacco use as "glamorous," and countering tobacco industry marketing to youth. The Center for Tobacco Policy and Organizing, a project of the American Lung Association of California, provides assistance with community organizing strategies and serves as a tobacco policy resource. Smokefree Air For Everyone (S.A.F.E.) provides information about secondhand smoke, such as policy suggestions for dealing with secondhand smoke in apartments and condos, and information and referrals for individuals in crisis due to secondhand smoke. Smokescreen Action Network contains links to announcement lists for a number of tobacco control organizations. Tobacco Technical Assistance Consortium (TTAC) is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting organizations in building and growing highly effective tobacco control programs. Attorney General Tobacco Litigation and Enforcement site contains
detailed information on the Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) between
the attorneys general and the tobacco industry, including the full
text of the MSA, frequently asked questions, and an on-line complaint
form to report potential settlement violations.
City Attorneys write new laws for the city, advise elected officials on legal issues, and file and defend civil lawsuits. City attorneys can play a key role in enforcing tobacco control laws with civil penalties. To find your City Attorney, click on "City Attorney Roster," organized either by city name or by last name. District Attorneys are county officers who prosecute criminal violations on behalf of the people of California. District Attorneys can play a key role in enforcing criminal (and sometimes civil) tobacco control laws. County Counsel write new laws for the county, advise elected officials on legal issues, and file and defend civil lawsuits. County counsel can play a key role in enforcing tobacco control laws with civil penalties. California Courts Self-Help Center offers information and assistance for individuals who are suing or being sued in small claims court. The website includes general background on small claims and mediation, as well as county-specific court information. Centers for Disease Control Tobacco Information and Prevention Source (TIPS) page provides current research on effects of tobacco use as well as news, educational materials, publications, and cessation information including the Surgeon General Reports, state information, tobacco industry documents and information on the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). CDC's State Tobacco Activities Tracking & Evaluation site contains up-to-date and historical state-level data on tobacco use prevention and control. Topics include behaviors, demographics, economics, legislation, and program implementation. Tobacco Control Section is part of the California Department of Health Services that administers the California Tobacco Tax Health Protection Act of 1988 - Proposition 99. The California Secondhand Smoke Policy Database, maintained by California’s Clean Air Project (CCAP), is an extensive collection of local ordinances, statewide laws, and selected voluntary policies addressing exposure to secondhand smoke. The database is updated monthly. Findlaw provides links to most major California municipal codes on the web. Findlaw has some municipal codes that the IGS Library site does not have. Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS) Library, UC Berkeley A helpful guide to California municipal codes and ordinances, with contact information for the UC Berkeley-based IGS Library. IGS has some municipal codes that Findlaw does not have.
