Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Q:
Why does your project only focus on the Asian & Pacific Islander community?
A:
Very few research projects have focused on the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) community in the United States. The "model minority" stereotype continues to impact the API community in the United States through perpetuating the notion that health problems such as HIV and substance use are not prevalent.

Q:
Why do you need my help in participation?
A:
There is a huge service gap in substance abuse and HIV prevention programs for API men who have sex with men (MSM). To minimize this gap, we developed the culturally sensitive curriculum targeting API MSM. Through your participation in the TEPOT 2 project, you can:
  • Increase your knowledge about substance abuse and HIV prevention and treatment programs.
  • Increase practical skills and self-efficacy to reduce substance use and sexual risk behaviors.

Q:
What risk can I expect from being in the study?
A:
One of the risks involved in the study is the possibility of a breach of confidentiality. However, the procedures to maintain confidentiality of your private information will be strictly maintained. All data and information you provide us will be identified by an ID number only, not your name or other personal characteristic. All your data and information will be accessible only to the project staff and will be stored in a locked cabinet and on a secured network until the completion of this study. After the completion of the project, research studies, and reports to the funding agency, they will be destroyed by permanently deleting from a hard drive or shredding hard copies.

Q:
How long does the intake interview last?
A:
Depending on each individual's responses, we estimate the whole intake process will be approximately two and a half hours, including the signed informed consent process, risk assessment, and the Brief Intervention.

Q:
Will I be compensated for my participation in TEPOT 2?
A:
In return for your time, effort, and travel expenses, you will receive gift cards for compensation.
  • Motivational Enhancement Intervention participants: You will receive a $20 gift card after completing each intake, Exit, and follow-up surveys. You will also receive a $10 gift card at the end of each Motivational Enhancement Intervention session. If you complete the project, you will receive a total of $90 in gift cards.
  • Brief Intervention participants: You will receive a $20 gift card after completing each intake, Exit, and follow-up surveys. You will receive a total of $60 in gift cards if you complete the project.

Q:
How will participating in TEPOT 2 benefit me?
A:
If you work with our Health Educators to pursue the goals of Motivational Enhancement Intervention and/or Brief Intervention, there is the possibility that you can reduce your substance use and HIV-related sexual risk behaviors. In addition, you will be offered an anonymous free HIV test at the Asian and Pacific Islander Wellness Center and referral services to other health and social service agencies.

There will be no direct benefit to you from answering the survey questionnaires. However, the information that you provide us will help Dr. Nemoto and his project team, and other health professionals to better understand and learn more about improving substance abuse and HIV prevention programs for API MSM.
