Biography

Meenakshi Subbaraman is a Program Director and Biostatistician with the Behavioral Health & Recovery Studies Group at the Public Health Institute. Before joining Behavioral Health and Recovery Studies, Dr. Subbaraman worked with the Alcohol Research Group for 15 years where she served as Director of Statistical and Data Services for the last two. Dr. Subbaraman received her MS in statistics from Stanford University and PhD in epidemiology from UC Berkeley. Much of her research focuses on alcohol and cannabis policy, including issues like spillover effects, or potential unintended harms or benefits related to policies. She also has expertise in cannabis research, including cannabis as a substitute for alcohol or other drugs and cannabis use during pregnancy. Some of Dr. Subbaraman’s current projects include a national survey of recovery residences across the US and studies of sober living houses in Los Angeles. She also has ongoing projects on alcohol policy, such as policies related to alcohol use during pregnancy. Her most recently funded project will examine how blood alcohol content limits for driving are associated with alcohol-related outcomes besides motor vehicle crashes in the US.
