PHI’s FACES for the Future is now accepting applications for their 2021 Virtual FACES Summer Medical Academy (FSMA).

Just like in previous years, FSMA gives high school students ages 15+ in-depth, hands-on opportunities to explore their interests in health, clinical skills, and the art of medicine.

FSMA is an intensive summer experience designed to expose high school students to the fields of medicine, nursing and allied health professions. The goal of the program is to offer youth a glimpse into the array of advanced educational strategies and tools that comprise current medical training, while familiarizing young people with critical concepts that promote an understanding of culturally responsive, compassionate and patient-centered health care practice.

FSMA welcomes students who are:

  • Motivated and responsible.
  • 15 years or older by the start of the program.
  • Genuinely interested in learning about a career in healthcare.
  • Willing to participate fully in a unique learning experience.

Block 1

June 21-July 2: 10:00-11:30am and 1:30-3:00pm

Workshops include:
– “Pathology: What Goes Wrong with the Body?”
– “Asking the Right Questions: Diagnosing Illness”
– “How to Take Vital Signs”

Block 2

July 12-July 23: 10:00-11:30am and 1:30-3:00pm

Workshops Include:
– “CPR: How to Save a Life”

– “Mental Health Diagnoses: Anxiety, Depression, & Psychosis”
– “Clinical Skills Workshop: Practice Suturing”

Block 3

July 26-July 30 10:00-11:30am and 1:30-3:00pm
Work in a team to solve a medical mystery! In this virtual scenario-based workshop series, students will meet with medical professionals in practice and apply the skills they learned in FSMA to gain first-hand insight into diagnosis, treatment, and care for a complex health issue. Only students who have already participated in FSMA are eligible to apply.

Application deadlines

All deadlines are for 6 pm PST:

  • Block 1: Wednesday, June 2, 2021
  • Block 2: Wednesday, June 23, 2021
  • Block 3: Wednesday, July 7, 2021

Costs

  • FSMA Block 1 Only: $1000
  • FSMA Block 2 Only: $1000
  • FSMA Block 1&3: $2000
  • FSMA Block 2&3: $2000
  • FSMA Block 1&2: $1800
  • FSMA Block 1,2 & 3: $2600

Certification courses

This summer, FACES is also partnering with PHI's Cypress Resilience Project to offer Mental Health First Aid Certifications to students and parents. In addition to the Block tracks, FSMA also offers additional certification courses:

Mental Health First Aid Certification for Students
Dates: June 29th AND July 1st (must attend both sessions)
Times: 10:00am-12:30pm
Tuition: $180 includes 6-hour course and professional certification

Youth Mental Health First Aid Certification for Parents and Adults
Dates: June 22nd AND June 24th (must attend both sessions)
Times: 9:00am-11:30am
Tuition: $180 includes 6-hour course and professional certification
