PHI’s Dr. Lynn Silver, director of  PHI’s Getting it Right from the Start, joins KALW’s State of the Bay to share her concerns with the cannabis industry, the health risks associated with cannabis use and why more people are becoming addicted to cannabis. Dr. Lynn Silver is also joined by Dr. Christopher Colwell, Chief of Emergency Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, and Alexandra Talbot to further discuss the cannabis industry and examine whether increased availability,  potency and social acceptance have led to new and unexpected risks for users.

Lynn Silver
The tobacco industry used to sell cigarettes as an asthma treatment claiming that smoking would help, even long after we began to understand its harms, so really the cannabis undustry is doing the same things… straight from the tobacco industry’s playbook. Lynn Silver, MD, MPH

The percentage of people who use [cannabis] and develop addiction has basically doubled within the last 20 years… that is probably due to the tremendous increase in potency. Lynn Silver, MD, MPH

Lynn Silver
Cannabis is being marketed as if it is the best thing since sliced bread and a wellness product when, in reality, what the industry is selling is nothing like the original plant. The flower is about 5 to 10 times stronger. They are selling chemical derivatives like vapes and dabs that can be 20x stronger. Lynn Silver, MD, MPH
