Pests like rodents and cockroaches are common causes of asthma, but conventional approaches to addressing pests, such as spraying pesticides, make asthma worse and can contribute to a range of other health problems.

In California, Medi-Cal’s Community Supports Asthma Remediation program covers integrated pest management (IPM)—a decision-making process that focuses on prevention and helps manage pests below unacceptable levels—services and supplies for eligible individuals.

In March 2025, PHI’s Regional Asthma Management and Prevention Program (RAMP) hosted this webinar that explored key IPM principles, how to connect home asthma trigger assessments to appropriate IPM services and supplies, and practical tips for working with both renters and homeowners. It also offered guidance on landlord-tenant interactions and selecting qualified IPM providers.

This presentation covers:

  • An overview of integrated pest management (IPM)
  • How Asthma Remediation can be used to address pests in accordance with IPM principles
  • Decision-making and the workflow once pests are identified
  • Technical assistance and tools

With support from the California Department of Pesticide Regulations and in partnership with the University of California Integrated Pest Management program, PHI’s Regional Asthma Management and Prevention (RAMP) is embarking on a project to support Medi-Cal managed care plans and Asthma Remediation programs in effectively integrating IPM into their asthma home visiting programs.
